Which divisional chart to read — and when

A varga (divisional chart) splits each planet’s degree inside its sign and recasts a focused chart. Kundaligram computes sixteen of them from the stored D1, from Hora (D2) through Shashtyamsa (D60), using Parashari division rules and Lahiri longitudes. Read the birth chart first. Open Navamsa (D9) for dharma and partnership tone, Dasamsa (D10) for career, and the others only when the question actually needs that slice. A varga never overrules the D1.

The sixteen charts on the engine
From the natal longitudes Kundaligram builds Hora (2), Drekkana (3), Chaturthamsa (4), Saptamsa (7), Navamsa (9), Dasamsa (10), Dwadasamsa (12), Shodasamsa (16), Vimsamsa (20), Chaturvimsamsa (24), Saptavimsamsa (27), Trimsamsa (30), Khavedamsa (40), Akshavedamsa (45), and Shashtyamsa (60), plus the natal D1 those divisions come from.
Lagna, Sun, and Moon charts are recasts of the same D1 with a different reference, not extra divisions. Bhava Chalit is a house-cusp view, also separate from this list.
Start with three, not sixteen
D1 answers “what is the map?” D9 is the classical magnification for dharma and the tone of partnership. D10 is the classical magnification for work and public role. Those three already cover most sincere questions.
Hora is consulted for resources, Drekkana for siblings and courage, Saptamsa for children, Dwadasamsa for parents, Trimsamsa for difficulties and vitality. Higher vargas such as D60 are technical. They punish a wrong birth time and should not lead a first reading.
Odd and even signs are not the same rule
Several Parashari vargas count forward from the sign itself when the sign is odd, and from a different starting sign when it is even. Kundaligram’s Saptamsa does this: odd signs start at themselves, even signs start from the 7th sign. An earlier bug treated only Taurus as the even case and shifted every other even sign by half the zodiac. The current rule matches the classical odd/even start.
Hora is also specific: in odd signs the first 15 degrees fall in Leo and the second 15 in Cancer; even signs reverse that. That is Parashari Sun/Moon hora, not a separate wealth formula bolted on afterwards.
One question, one extra chart
Opening every varga at once produces contradiction theatre. Pick the division that matches the question, confirm the birth time is good enough for that division’s sensitivity, and fold the result back into the D1.
Kundaligram stores the divisional set with the birth chart. You can inspect it in the kundali view and ask, for example, how D10 sits with the current dasha, without recomputing the sky.
Frequently asked questions
- If D9 and D1 disagree, which wins?
- D1 remains the chart. D9 magnifies a theme. A conflict is a nuance to interpret, not a vote that deletes the birth chart.
- Do I need an exact birth time for D60?
- Yes. Shashtyamsa changes on a fraction of a degree. If the time is approximate, stay with D1 and be cautious even with D9.
- Are Western harmonic charts the same as these vargas?
- No. These divisions follow Parashari sign-counting rules on the sidereal zodiac, including odd/even starts. They are not tropical harmonics.
