Tara koota, also called Dina, is worth 3 of 36 points and uses both Moon nakshatras. Count nakshatras from one person to the other, including the start, divide by 9, and treat remainders 3, 5, and 7 as unfavourable for that direction (0 points). Any other remainder scores 1.5. Add both directions. A fully favourable pair scores 3; one harsh direction scores 1.5; both harsh directions score 0.

A count of nakshatras, not a star myth
Tara here is a remainder class in a cycle of nine, taken from the 27 nakshatras. It is often taught as Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Pratyak, Sadhana, Naidhana, Mitra, and Parama Mitra — remainders 1 through 9.
Kundaligram follows the operational rule used in its matching source: remainders 3, 5, and 7 (Vipat, Pratyak, Naidhana) contribute nothing from that direction. The other six classes contribute 1.5.
Both directions are required
Counting from the groom’s nakshatra to the bride’s can be favourable while the reverse count is not. The published Tara score is the sum, so the maximum is 1.5 + 1.5 = 3.
The count is inclusive: the distance from a nakshatra to itself is 1, remainder 1, which is favourable. Two people with the same Moon nakshatra therefore score 3 on Tara, even though Nadi may still score 0 if they share a nadi.
Birth time matters more here than for Varna
Nakshatra changes about every 24 hours of Moon motion, and faster in perception near a boundary. An uncertain birth time can flip Tara even when the Moon sign looks stable.
If either birth time is approximate, treat a Tara zero or a Tara three as provisional until the nakshatras are confirmed.
Do not isolate one harsh tara name
Vipat or Naidhana sounds alarming in Hindi. In this koota it only zeroes one direction’s 1.5 points. The other direction may still score, and 33 other points remain on the sheet.
