Antardasha explained — the sub-period inside a mahadasha

An antardasha (bhukti) is the sub-period inside a Vimshottari mahadasha. Its length is proportional: the sub-planet’s own mahadasha years, divided by 120, times the major period’s years. While it runs, classical reading holds two planets together — the mahadasha lord and the antardasha lord — and judges both from the birth chart. The sub-period does not cancel the major period.

The proportion, in plain arithmetic
Vimshottari mahadashas sum to 120 years: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. An antardasha of planet B inside the mahadasha of planet A lasts (years of B / 120) × years of A.
Example: Sun antardasha inside Venus mahadasha is (6 / 120) × 20 = 1 year. Saturn inside Venus is (19 / 120) × 20, a little over 3 years. Kundaligram uses that proportion, then places the dates from the Moon’s remaining balance at birth.
Two lords, one season
The mahadasha lord sets the longer climate. The antardasha lord colours the months inside it. A difficult sub-lord can make a broadly supportive major period feel narrower, and a supportive sub-lord can make a heavy major period more workable. Neither erases the other’s natal condition.
Read house ownership, sign, and aspects for both planets. A “Jupiter antardasha” is not the same story in two charts.
Balance at birth comes first
The first mahadasha is usually partial. It is the leftover portion of the birth nakshatra lord’s years. Antardashas inside that opening period are scaled to the leftover, not to a full textbook mahadasha that already ended before birth.
If a printed timeline seems to “start late,” check the balance years before assuming the sequence is wrong.
Finer slices, used sparingly
Pratyantardasha, the sub-sub-period, is a further split of the same proportion. Kundaligram’s glossary and product focus stay on mahadasha and antardasha, which are stable enough to discuss without pretending a week has a fate of its own.
Yogini dasha has its own antardashas on a 36-year cycle. Keep the two systems named. A Venus antardasha in Vimshottari is not a Pingala antardasha in Yogini.

- Hold both. The major lord is the climate; the sub-lord is the weather inside it. Then look at how each sits in the natal chart.

- Yes, after your chart is stored. Ask in plain Hindi or English. The reply should use your chart’s lords, not a generic period horoscope.
